We Still Need Bill More Than Tom

"The greatest and most accomplished football player of all time with 6 rings (TOM BRADY) is showing why he is the more important piece then the greatest coach in NFL history with 6 rings!"

Ryan on Facebook

The opinion of my friend Ryan is one shared by many. Tony Massarotti of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston has a poll on Twitter basically asking “Who ya’ got?” Bill or Tom?

69% said Tom.

Oh my.

Did you not watch the games the past 20 years? Do you not understand anything about the ultimate team sport of football? I bet these are the same people who made fun of Brady after a poor Week #1 and wantsed to sign Cam Newton ling term after week #3.

I don’t know which is more aggravating: the fact that we always have to pick sides or the “what have you done for me lately” short term mentality that is prevalent in our society right now.

I don’t know if it’s because of social media? Or the video game generation that doesn’t even have the attention span to sit through a 30 second commercial?

There is no dispute that Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time. Love the guy. Still cheering for him in Tampa. But if you step back and look at the full body of work and the amazing accomplishments of the New England Patriots dynasty of the past two decades, Bill Belichick gets more credit.

Without each other would they have been to nine Super Bowls and won six of those? Doubtful. I’m really hesitant to put one against the other in terms of importance. What Brady did in all of those Super Bowls and through the playoffs and of course the regular season is like nothing we will see in New England again.

But while Brady was doing his thing, Belichick was doing basically everything else. Overseeing the offense. Supervising the defense. Reviewing all the film. Bossing the assistant coaches around. Drafting and signing players. Juggling the roster each and every week. It’s a workload that would kill most of us. No wonder he’s grouchy with the media.

Football takes about 35 guys all doing their jobs to win even a single game. How many games did the Patriots win because of some Special Teams play? Or some adjustment Belichick made on defense mid game, including a Malcolm Butler interception on the biggest stage ever?

Look. It may be 51% to 49% if you are assigning credit. Close. But no matter how you divide up the accolades for the success of the Pats, Coach Bill deserve slightly more than Brady.
