Black Bears in the NHL

The NHL season is in full swing, so I thought that it would be good to check in and see how former Maine Black Bears are doing. There are six former Black Bears currently playing in the NHL. Jimmy Howard and Gustav Nyquist are with the Detroit Red Wings, Ben Bishop and Devin Shore are playing for the Dallas Stars, Ben Hutton is playing for the Vancouver Canucks, while Scott Darling is playing for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Detroit Red Wings have had a tough start to the season at 4-8-2. Howard has played well in goal and is 3-5-0 with a 3.06 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Nyquist is second on the team in scoring with a goal and 11 assists for 12 points.

Dallas is 8-5-0 on the season. The Stars are coached by Maine all-time leading scorer and All-American Jim Montgomery, who is in his first season behind the bench in the NHL. Bishop has seen action in 10 games in goal and is 6-4-0 with a 2.32 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. He has one shutout. Shore is sixth on the team in scoring with three goals and six assists for nine points. He has a pair of game-winning goals, including the game-winner last week against Toronto. It was especially special for Shore, who grew up in Ajax, Ontario, about 30 miles outside of Toronto.

Hutton has seen action in 13 games for the Canucks, who are in second place in the Pacific Division with a record of 9-6-0. He has two goals and an assist for three points. It’s been an impressive start for Hutton, who did not record a goal a year ago.

Darling has been injured the majority of the season. He has played in just two games and is 0-2-0 with a 3.13 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.

Detroit will host Vancouver on Tuesday night pitting Howard and Nyquist against Hutton. If you watch the Bruins, you’ll have a chance to see several former Black Bears on opposing teams this week. Boston hosts Dallas on Monday night and Vancouver on Thursday.
