Coach Cosgrove Coaching Mules, Not Bears? Works For Me.

When I heard the news two weeks ago that Coach Jack Cosgrove was taking the Colby College football position, my initial reaction was wow! The more I think and read about it however, it seems like a great fit.

I never worked with the football program directly while at UMaine, but working there for 15 years I certainly knew Coach Cos. For a long time, he epitomized Maine athletics. One of my most vivid memories was standing on Morse Field with fellow assistant athletic directors Seth Woodcock and Will Biberstein when Maine hosted New Hampshire on Dec. 7, 2013 in the FCS Playoff Second Round. It was probably three hours before the game, and as we stood there talking a bald eagle flew over the empty stadium. It was a surreal experience. Three hours later the stands were packed on a cold December day. The game did not end the way Black Bear fans wanted, but I’d rarely felt that much pride being a Black Bear. The team that Cosgrove led that year was special.

Cosgrove coached for 23 years at Maine. His 129 career wins are the most in school history. He recorded three NCAA playoff victories and coached 20 All-Americans. He coached three NFL Draft picks and numerous players that went on to have successful NFL careers.

Following his coaching career with the Black Bears, Cosgrove served as the senior associate athletic director at UMaine the past two years. It only seems right that Coach Cos is heading back to the sidelines. I am thrilled for both him and Colby.

I think that this also speaks volumes about the Colby athletics department. I don’t believe that Coach Cosgrove would have gone just anywhere at this point in his career. For Colby to pursue Cosgrove and for him to accept says a lot in my opinion.

I’m glad that Colby’s color is also blue as I’m not sure I can see Coach Cos in another color. This appears to be a wonderful fit, and I wish Coach Cos all the success in the world. Colby is getting one of the best!
