My Personal, Biased Top 10 Sports Stories for 2017

Happy New Year and thanks for reading the Maine Sports Chowdah. 2017 was another amazing sports year and 2018 promises to be even better!

I'm sure you have seen lots of year-end lists, but what the heck, what's one more?

10. Jeff Solari starts the Sports Chowdah, Maine's only free sports email newsletter.

To me, since I quit my full time law firm job in part to the success of the Chowdah, this is #1. However, that would be pretty self serving to actually put it at the top, so I resisted.

9. The U Maine Hockey team finishes the first semester above .500.

It's a small yet significant step in dragging this once proud program out of the cellar.

8. Husson Eagles win an NCAA Playoff game.

They dominate a putrid conference so it's been tough to tell how legit the program is. But with the road playoff win over undefeated Springfield and a move to a better conference soon, the Eagles are soaring!

7. The Red Sox fire John Farrell.

Two A.L. East titles and and a World Series crown was not enough to save this dumbass.

6. Red Sox hire Alex Cora and the Yankees hire Aaron Boone.

Two historic franchises with the highest payrolls, and loftiest expectation both hand the reigns to guys who have not combined to manage one single baseball game of any significance.

5. Pats trade Jimmy G.

OK- maybe this is not bigger than some I have already listed, but it will be as I think Brady's former clipboard holder is going to be a stud in the NFL for years to come.

4. McGregor-Mayweather Fight

Both the UFC and boxing have a good diehard fanbase. But to get people like me, who don't much care for either sports, to be fired up about a unique event like this one, is impressive. I enjoyed the hype leading up and the fight as well.

3. Celtics sign Gordon Hayward and trade I.T. for Kyrie Irving.

Wow! After battling each other for the conference title, the two teams swap all stars. You just don't see that everyday.

2. MDI Boys basketball team wins first ever state title.

Yup. I'm biased. Remember I said it was my personal list. Mount Desert Island has a long rich tradition of high school hoops. There were many boys state titles that crossed the bridge before the consolidation into one high school almost 50 years ago, but none since. That changed this year making this old alumni quite happy.

1. 28-3

No Brainah. Just about everyone had written the Pats off at that score. But someone Brady and team stormed back and won the first over time Superbowl in history. The best stat from the game is that New England led for zero seconds of the game, and still won. Think about that!

Here's to an awesome 2018!
