I Resolve to not Expect Too Much from The Celtics

As I write this, me ‘n the Mrs. have just returned from the U-Maine fitness center. I was surprised how busy the place was, particularly considering most of the students are away while on holiday break.

Suppose the folks showing-up today were getting an early start on a New Year’s resolution to be more fit in 2018? If this is the case, it will be no big surprise if about half of these eager resolution makers lose interest in their fitness dreams. Why? Because too often, resolutions related to fitness are unrealistic. “This is the year I’m going to drop 30 pounds by exercising two hours every day while eating nothing but carrots!” While the intention may be good, ain’t no way this is going to happen. Why? Again: unrealistic expectations.

Let me be clear. I am a huge fan of the Boston Celtics; I am especially fond of this year’s team. Great ball movement, strong defense, seemingly good guys, and a great coach. I certainly hope they bring home another championship banner at the end of the season.

But….here’s where expectations come-in. Let me rephrase that a bit: Here’s where unrealistic expectations come-in. While the Celtics have been on a roll all season, and despite the fact they’ve thrilled us with some incredible come-backs, and yes…even though it seems at times they are a team of destiny, let’s not establish unrealistic expectations for 2017-2018.

Lebron is still around, turning in another super-stud season. The Warriors are still stacked. While the Celtics are unexpectedly good this year, they aren’t quite there yet. Give them another year. Bring back Gordon Hayward. Give Tatum a bit more seasoning. Let the mix of vets and youngsters have a dash more seasoning. Then….watch out!

If your New Year’s resolution is to watch the C’s hang a banner at the end of this season, I’d like to say I’m with you. But I like to keep my resolutions more realistic. Ain’t no way I’m going to keep up with those college kids at the U-Maine fitness center, and there ain’t no way the Shamrocks are going to banner #18 in 2018.
