For the 11th time in my life, I’m getting ready for a Super Bowl involving the New England Patriots. I cant believe I just wrote that sentence! 11 times?!
I was in high school in 1986 for the Bears beatdown. I bet you remember the Super Bowl Shuffle? That was the Bears song. I also recall a parody of the song "Leader of the Pack” called “Leader of the Pats” on the radio. Raymond Berry focused. Not sure if it was produced by a local or regional radio station?
I watched that game with a bunch of buddies. But given how that one went, we were playing Nerf dunk ball by halftime.
In 1997 I bought a new TV and hosted a huge party at my apartment in Bangor. Pretty darn good game yet another Pats defeat.
I partied on Bourbon Street after the Pats stunned the Rams in 2002. I was so lucky to score tickets at face value for the first of what would be World Championships for Brady, Bill and the boys.
The rest I have seen on TV in various locations with a wide variety of people. I even watched the Giants losses with some Giants fans. A true test of friendship.
This week I am in Florida preparing for the rematch with the Rams. I have made sure to wear something with a New England logo everyday. If you want to draw attention to yourself, do this when traveling. Politics aside, I don’t think there's anything more polarizing you can do than to proudly display the Pats logo outside of our home region.
I have experienced a few high fives and “Go Pats!” But it is way more common to have to smile through a disparaging remark or two. But I love it!
Enjoy this years game and thanks for reading this Super Bowl edition of the Sports Chowdah. I should point out, I sent the first edition of this newsletter in January of 2017. Since then, the Pats have appeared in the Super Bowl all three years. Coincidence? I think not.
