Sure, Friends and Family Are Fine, But There's Lots to Love About Sports During This Mushy Week

February 12, 2018

Ahhhhh. Love is in the air, isn’t it? Of course it is. The folks at Hallmark tell me it is every year around this time. It’s Valentine’s Day, the day you tell the one you love that you love them so much more than other days. Shouldn’t you do that everyday of the year? I guess flowers and chocolates make it seem better.

Anyway, I love my wife and kid, I love most of my family...remember, you can’t pick them.

Those are easy things. How about other things I love, when it comes to sports. Here are my thoughts on that subject.

I love the upcoming high school basketball tournament. This year marks the 23rd year in a row I have been involved in the tourney on the media end. I started as a sports production assistant at WZON (back when it was all sports) in 1996 doing sideline interviews. Those can be great or they can be the pits. It depends on the interview.

I worked my way up to do play by play for WZON, and now I have the privilege of working for all of the video outlets doing the tourney, including MPBN, which I’ve watched since I was a little kid in Monson, Maine.

The “faces” of MPBN I remember are Joe Gould, Bob Lahey, and Bill Macmanus. Their producer is my producer, Ed Fowler, still going strong after all these years. I feel so fortunate to be able to work for them. It’s the best week of the year, bar none.

I love the NCAA basketball tournament. The early round upsets, the Cinderella stories, and most of the time, the “big boys” eventually winning it all. I know ratings are down, but I still would take this over any major sporting event during the year.

I love the remote control. Is there one item that has made watching sports easier than the remote? I don’t think so.

I love the British Open. Why the British Open, you ask? Because the final round starts at 7:00am on Sunday morning. This is the one time of year we understand what it must be like to be a West Coast sports fan. It must be awesome to watch football at 10am every week, and live in places with no snow.

I love sports uniforms. I talked about this before the start of the NFL season, but I love to study what teams wear, colors, variations, logos, all that stuff. It’s kind of nerdy, and I’m fine with that. Nerds are in right now, at least that is what my wife tells me.

I love just shooting a basketball in my free time. My NBA fantasies are behind me, but I’m fortunate enough to live on campus and I have a gym at my disposal almost 24 hours a day. When I need to think, I head to the gym and just shoot. Hours can pass, and I have a clear mind afterwards. There is no better therapy.

I also love pizza. Pizza and sports just go together, as Forrest Gump said, like peas and carrots. As I get a bit older, I probably shouldn’t eat as much of it, but if there is a more perfect food out there, I really don’t want to know what it is. It’s good for breakfast (cold), lunch, dinner, or for a snack. If you don’t love pizza, we can’t hang out.

I certainly have many more loves in my life, but for now, this list will have to do. I love the fact that you actually read this today. It warms my heart. Happy Valentine’s Day!
